The town’s name derives from the Latin “ter-ignis”—“ignited three times”—in memory of the recursive eruptions its inhabitants witnessed over centuries, the latest dating 1939 and 1944. Situated on the slopes of a dormant volcano in what is considered a “red zone” of volcanic risk by the Italian state, this region bears the traces of several overlapping environmental histories of fire, which comprise many volcanic eruptions and, more recently, massive toxic waste burials. In 2010, the area became known as southern Italy’s “Land of Fires” (terra dei fuochi): volcanic rock quarries and caves were illegally used by the mafia as landfills for toxic waste, which often were left burning, which prompted strong forms of resistance, including activists lowering themselves into the Vesuvius volcano. The performance piece is structured around a prone figure—the sleeping or dead body of a man—around which the stories of ten women both gravitate and depart. This enigmatic figure echoes the dormant volcano which, even while asleep, bears witness to the events of history. It holds within it the memories of ancient eruptions, of recent environmental struggles, and it anticipates catastrophes to come. The sleeping body intermittently dissolves into a series of vignettes pertaining to biographical aspects of the women. Each life-history departs from the structuring figure, to show how people in Terzigno sever from, or reckon with, social expectations about family, fraternity, and faith in their everyday lives. This performance project is part document and part personal exploration into natural history, and the latent stratification of events as it relates to people’s lives and their homes. Driven by the poetic possibilities within haunted landscapes, While You Were Asleep explores ways to tell the story of catastrophic events that grapple with the “unseen”—the continuous underground tremors of the earth, environmental disasters experienced in ancient times, more recent eruptions undergone during WWII, and the contemporary effects of invisible toxicity left by decades of waste burials. It invites smaller-scale perspectives to interrogate the interrelations between form and content, and asks how aesthetics forms theory and how theory performs politics. Gravitating around those details that are often seen as inconsequential and unimportant, this conference gestures towards alternative ways of imagining and enacting form, performance, and the formless. Through the lenses of dust, drops, and gaps, reality looks different—blurred, unclear. Minima Formalia asks what role details play in understanding or altering our worldview, and whether one can make a grammar of small or empty gestures. Marked by corporeal vulnerability – her own, that of the female body, the body of the earth, the body of film – Lahire’s work proposes a comparison between the violence committed by patriarchal society against women and that committed by humans against the non-human world. Her four anti-nuclear 16mm films echo the feminist anti-nuclear, anti-war movement at the time. Formally, they merge documentary, performance, animation, experimentation (superimposition – both in camera and on the optical printer – re-filming, colourisation, changes of speed, layering of sounds). “Kaleidoscopic” is a word that many texts use to describe her work.” – Excerpt from Maria Palacios Cruz's introduction to Living on Air: the Films and Words of Sandra Lahire. It considers “toxic landscapes' ' expansively: from the material pollution and contamination of lands to the inner crises experienced individually and collectively in times of ecological crisis. The course will consider the perceptually elusive aspect of poisons—the way such substances trouble corporeal sensation by oscillating between visibility and invisibility, affecting entire lifeworlds after relatively long exposures stretched out over generations. As such, human experience of poisons fluctuates between the denial of their existence and the tacit knowledge they can determine one’s life, or even an entire social world—generating new forms of identities, attachments, and senses of home. Several questions will guide us in this inquiry: what are the material, political, social, imaginary, and psychic effects of poison? How do sensory perceptions determine our understanding of ecological crisis? What is the social and political role of art and anthropology in fostering environmental awareness and re-imagining new futures? As these queries suggest, the course will aim to create frameworks for thinking about aesthetics together with political ecology (in particular through the role of the senses), drawing from anthropology, cinema, visual studies and gender studies—particularly recent theories of the body and “toxic embodiment” brought forward by feminist scholars. Special attention will be paid to speech, text, image, and bodies in the spirit of fostering an intermedial anthropological practice that takes up a phenomenological relation to the sensible world. The course begins by tracing a genealogy of primary texts that emphasize the importance of language for understanding “the social” throughout the 20th century. We then consider how theories of language have morphed in time, giving a more prominent place to the body, until reaching the desire in contemporary anthropological theory to overcome the limits of human language altogether. Throughout, we will pay attention to interdisciplinary dialogues and legacies: to the way in which anthropological theory has been shaped by linguistics, sociology, political economy, literary criticism, philosophy—as much as it has also, in turn, influenced these different disciplinary fields. Thematically, we will focus on the concept of the gift, on notions of discourse and power, on the body and its practices, and on the concept of performativity.
